I pray in the mornings, Lord of my life, and read in the psalms that you will
save those who listen to your word, who temper law with mercy,
and care for the hungry and the oppressed;
who live justice into every moment of their lives.
But it isn’t enough, Holy God.
It is not those who already do these things who break my heart,
but the multitudes who do not:
the people of power who manipulate and subvert government;
the lawmakers who sell the lives of the people for pleasure and gain;
the corporate heads who simply live as though you do not exist;
as though your people have no worth.
It is not enough to save the just and the righteous, God.
It is your people whose spirits,
suffocated and smothered by power and greed and selfishness,
who need your light and saving grace.
I cry to you, O God.
Do not save just the righteous –
save the beloved brothers and sisters who create pain and need and violence.
Save them, Holy One, as you save us all. I beg you – save them.
save those who listen to your word, who temper law with mercy,
and care for the hungry and the oppressed;
who live justice into every moment of their lives.
But it isn’t enough, Holy God.
It is not those who already do these things who break my heart,
